I Hate Pride

Pride. Arrogance. A haughty spirit. These are hated by God — and for good reason. Explore what Scripture says about the sin that precedes all others.

“To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.”

— Proverbs 8:13

What Is Pride?

We're not talking about being proud of your children's accomplishments or taking satisfaction in a job well done. We're talking about the deeper, more destructive kind: arrogance, self-exaltation, and the belief that you are the center of your own universe.

This is the pride that Scripture warns about relentlessly — the pride that destroyed kings, toppled empires, and according to Christian theology, was the very first sin ever committed. It's the root from which greed, envy, anger, and cruelty grow.
